Rogue Legacy 1 source code released

It's not FOSS, but it does allow redistribution of derivative works. Here are the actual terms:

Quoting: https://github.com/flibitijibibo/RogueLegacy1/blob/main/LICENSE.mdPermission is granted to anyone to use this software and to alter it and redistribute it freely, subject to the following restrictions:

  • You may not alter or redistribute this software in any manner that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or private monetary compensation. This includes, but is not limited to, selling altered or unaltered versions of this software, or including advertisements of any kind in altered or unaltered versions of this software.

  • The origin of this software must not be misrepresented; you must not claim that you wrote the original software. If you use this software in a product, you are required to include an acknowledgement in the product that this software is the copyright of Cellar Door Games and is based on the Rogue Legacy 1 source code.

  • Altered source/binary versions must be plainly marked as such, and must not be misrepresented as being the original software.

  • You must not distribute any materials from the game which are not included in this repo unless approved by us in writing.

  • This notice may not be removed or altered from any source/binary distribution.
So you can't use it as the basis for a commercial game, you can't try to pass off derivatives as official, and you need to give credit. FOSS would be nice, but this doesn't strike me as terribly onerous.

Star Fox like shooter Whisker Squadron: Survivor just added a campaign mode to blast through
20 June 2024 at 9:11 pm UTC

I was gonna say it sounds like this is converging on what the original Whisker Squadron was supposed to be, but it looks like the store page for the other game doesn't mention on-rails sections anymore. I guess they decided to split the concept into completely separate Star Fox-like and Everspace-like games? I think that was a good decision if so. I'm actually a little more interested in this one now that it appears to be developing into more of a full-fledged rail shooter and not just a basic side-project.

Quoting: lqe5433How it was possible without a 100% decomp?
Last I heard, 2s2h is incorporating a bunch of pull requests that haven't been merged into the main decomp project yet, and what little was left after that they did themselves. As I understand it, the decomp project has a very stringent process because it's aiming for a well-documented, perfect recreation of the original source, whereas 2s2h just needed something functional, which is how they were able to get a little ahead of the decomp.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyYesyes, the Americas, true enough, I was just typing quickly, sheesh. I can't believe you did a multi-paragraph dissertation on what was basically a spelling flame. But my point stands: US people call themselves "Americans" as if there was nobody else on either continent.
I hesitate to go further on this tangent, but this comes up from time to time and I get the impression there may be a genuine disconnect here. Do people outside the US really think we use the word "America" as a synonym for "the Americas," and not simply as an abbreviation of "The United States of America"? Because it's the latter. When people here talk about America or Americans, we're talking about the US or citizens thereof, not trying to speak for anybody else. If we want to speak more broadly, we'll use more precise words like the actual names of the continents, or "the Americas." In fact, I'm genuinely surprised to see you react as if the phrase "the Americas" is being pedantic in this instance, because I've always taken the need for such specificity for granted.

Sorry if I've written another dissertation, I just feel like I'm having words put in my mouth anytime this comes up. There are plenty of legit pigheaded attitudes to go around in the US, but I don't think a simple abbreviation of our country's stupid name is one of them.

Quoting: Marlockcan any of the xbox players around here exolain the appeal of the left analogue being so far up, arguably less comfortable to use than the d-pad?

as a playstation player i always use the left analogue stick to move the player character around and i don't really see how the xbox layout can be better for anyone

I think it depends on how you hold a controller. The way I do, with my hands pointed mostly forward and with the grips filling my palms, my thumbs naturally land on the upper controls at rest. The only way I can get the lower controls to feel like the primary positions is if I mainly hold the body with my finger tips and knuckles, with my hands pointed more inward toward each other. I feel like I have more control the first way, but like my wrists are maybe at a more natural angle the second way.

The GameCube controller was very clearly designed for the former style. The PS1 and 2 controllers seem like they're maybe designed for the latter (I could never find a comfortable way to hold them). The 360 controller feels like it can accommodate either style reasonably well, and other modern controllers look like they follow a similarly less prescriptive trend.

Workshop load order is really helpful. Finally I can give people a better solution than "unsubscribe and resubscribe and hope Steam moves it to the end of the list" when they're trying to use two of my mods together.

Quoting: tuubiUnless the game got fixed since Samsai streamed the Linux release a week ago, prepare for some jank. Models glitching out etc. You can find the VOD here if you want to see for yourself.
From the wave mode patch notes 2 days ago:

Quoting: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2506580/view/3704832514244640229I also wanted to get yesterdays patch out as soon as possible, because it contained a ton of bug fixes unrelated to the wave mode. Now that the game has released, a lot of new people have played it and in doing so, they’ve discovered a lot of bugs.

[...]

The game is made by one person and tested by a few volunteers, so I appreciate the leniency you’ve shown me with accepting the bugs. Even so, I am very disappointed to have allowed them through.

Luckily, patching builds on Steam is very easy and I’ve been able to patch these out. Still, I dislike the mentality of releasing an unfinished game and then fixing it later.
I don't know if everything Samsai encountered has been fixed, but if any bugs remain I think there's a good chance they'd be fixed if reported.
