I've got a fairly rigorous personal policy when it comes to games with in-game spending or even some of the ones that come with much non-free dlc: they are out.

I simply will not allow such adversarial design elements in my gaming time.

I know PC games generally don't get physical releases so I now buy PS4 and PS5 games when I want a copy to preserve. Most PlayStation games work offline without ever needing an update but PS5 does have a backup option built in.

I still primarily buy games on Steam but accept the risk I could lose games in the future. I will also be using GOG where possible to buy games I want to preserve as they offer a direct download of the installer.

I now have over 600 Movies and 30 PS4/5 Games on physical. I now refuse to just rely on 3rd parties with my media purchases.

True ownership has nothing to do with physical media: any drm-free game purchased digitally grants you more ownership than any disk (or even cartridge) release that comes preloaded with a phone-home-to-see-if-the-publisher-grants-permission-to-play check.

Even this current case still allows you to get your eternally playable copy before they remove it - where the shutdown of a grant-permission-server would have blocked you from playing it in the future if this game had had drm restrictions.

Why? It's free software, simply asking for funding. That's an "egregious abuse" in your book? If so, your book is stunningly privileged. Free and Libre Open Source Software is an absolute anomaly in our (mostly) capitalist society. Give them some money, and if you have no money to give, then at least don't complain when they beg for funds once a year, in a trivially ignored pop-up.

Asking for money is fine, using a position of power on a system to deliver that message at a time it is likely to break a user's workflow, without their consent, is not.

That has nothing to do with privilege, more with avoiding conflicts of interest and respecting other people's boundaries (both sorely lacking in modern software development).

Not a fan, to put it mildly.

However much the funding is needed, it is an abuse of kde's position on the system it has been installed on. Other projects having more egregious donation requests is no excuse, especially since most of those do not have the position of trust on the system that kde does.

What would make it much more acceptable to me is if it were an opt-in through the welcome screen and/or notification settings. A simple "remind me to consider a donation" option.

I will freely admit it is partly about perception; if I feel that said publisher/dev is in the business of playable monetisations, they're out.

Given my insane backlog and the high number of high quality releases without such nonsense, I have no qualms erring on the side of caution when considering to purchase a game. Which means that, at the moment, paradox is on my ignore list.

As for this game, I think I'd rather dig up my old copy of hamsterball and see if I can get it running ^_^

Shops seem to be in near-permanent sales-mode nowadays, so it makes sense to keep the high base price and joining those as opposed to lowering the base price and not joining them. Gets more eyes on the game with the added advantage of being able to advertise a "higher percentage" off when they are on a real sale.

This please! There are much better cross platform toolkits. Electron is trash. The only app I've seen that uses it well is Discord.

Rather fond of the heroic launcher. It runs smoother than steam on my decade old laptop and electron means it is easy for me, even as someone with a bare minimum of html and css skills, to dig into its source and chuck out the parts that I don't want.
